The Company

WWF, also known as the World Wide Fund for Nature, is a prominent international non-governmental organization dedicated to the conservation of nature and the reduction of humanity's footprint on the environment. Over the last decade, WWF has significantly expanded its global presence and impact, spearheading initiatives across continents to protect endangered species, promote sustainable practices in agriculture and forestry, and advocate for policies that address climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Challenge

WWF's "Driven to Waste" report estimates that up to 40% of all food is lost or wasted from farm to fork, with 1.2 billion tonnes (15.3%) lost on farms during and after harvest. This loss not only represents a waste of nutrients but also of resources, including 10% of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and land area larger than India. This highlights the urgent need for better management and innovative solutions to minimize waste and reduce the environmental footprint. Robust measurement and monitoring systems are crucial to identify key loss areas and develop effective strategies, contributing to environmental sustainability, food security, and resource efficiency globally.

Our Approach

To address this issue, Lyncros and WWF developed the Global Farm Loss Tool (GFLT), a simplified tool for growers of all sizes and crop types to measure and report their on-farm losses. This innovative platform helps farmers track and document what is left in the field, understand the reasons, and communicate with buyers to develop new solutions and channels for their surplus. At a macro level, the GFLT collects data on global farm losses, providing governments and experts with new benchmarks for more effective policies, reducing the environmental footprint, and mitigating food insecurity. The tool is compatible with existing reporting standards and tools, facilitating a coherent integration into global waste reduction efforts. By fostering collaboration between farmers, buyers, and policymakers, the GFLT contributes to a more sustainable and resilient food system.

Results

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in collaboration with Lyncros has developed the Global Farm Loss Tool (GFLT) to streamline crop loss management for farmers worldwide. This innovative tool simplifies data collection and analysis, empowering farmers to enhance productivity and reduce agricultural losses.  Together with WWF, we are committed to advancing sustainable agriculture practices globally.
